Sunscreen In A Pill?

sunscreen pillIt might sound a little futuristic, but with all the advancements in the pharmaceutical world you knew that a sunscreen pill couldn’t be far off. Imagine how much easier it would be to just pop a pill rather than deal with the endless applying and reapplying of sunscreen in its archaic lotion form. According to an article on ABC WEWS TV out of Cleveland’s website, the day sunscreen in a pill may have finally arrived.

The pill is not exactly a stand alone sunscreen, but it can help your sunscreen function a lot more effectively. This magic pill is the Advanced Skin Brightening Formula by GliSODin.

According to the manufacturer you can “enhance the strength of your topical sunscreens and not have to worry about reapplying after a dip in the pool.” This would be a tremendous boon to our society and our better living through chemistry mentality. Imagine how relaxing it could be for mothers to not have to worry about reapplying sunscreen during a day at the beach. Just toss it on one time, throw a couple of pills down the little guy’s throat, and then you can just let them run around like maniacs the rest of the day.

Sounds too perfect, doesn’t it?

Family medicine specialist Dr. Robert Zaid explained, “It’s not exactly sunscreen in a pill. This medication works on the inside to reduce the damage done by the skin.”

Specifically, the product promises to reduce skin reddening from the sun and photo aging. “When the sun hits us we have what’s called oxidative stress. Basically there’s damage to the DNA which can then cause cancer. It comes from the UV rays.” Zaid continued, “It doesn’t protect you from that. From behind the scenes, it’s trying to minimize the damage done by the sun.”

So its not the magical sunscreen in a pill that we’ve been imagining. At least its a step in the right direction. This is just another in the long line of products that, if used in conjunction with a regular program of sun protection, can possibly provide some benefit.

There is no magical cure for the damage that the sun can do. The best ways to protect yourself are the same as they’ve been for years…

  • Try and avoid the midday sun when possible, as the damaging rays are strongest then
  • Wear SPF 15 or greater sunscreen
  • Wear protective hats, clothing, and sunglasses

Oh, and keep your fingers crossed for that magical sunscreen in a pill.
